About us
Some words with the band.
Why are you called The Rocky Coasts?
Kiril (Singer and Guitar): Initially, when we were brainstorming various names to go with we thought of The Jagged Peaks. However, thinking it was too similar to Twin Peaks, and combining our surf rock influence we came up with The Rocky Coasts. After the band moved to Boulder, it wound up working out well since we’re from New Jersey, the coast, and are active in Colorado, the Rockies.
What are your musical influences?
Rhys (Singer and Guitar): Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Surf Curse, Allah Las, The Cure
How long has the band been together?
TJ (Bass): The Rocky Coasts have been together as we are today since the fall of 2020. However, they were initially formed in the summer of 2019, in their junior year of high school, eventually moving to Colorado for college and picking up a new drummer and saxophone player along the way.
How do u write your songs?
Jason (Drummer and Producer): Rhys and Kiril typically write lyrics and come up with chord progressions individually, then bring the song to the band. Then, more extensive parts are created as well as a refined song structure.
What sets you apart from other bands in Boulder and Denver?
Jason: The Rocky Coasts are constantly improving their songwriting, attempting to find new sounds, and striving to be unique. We are different from the typical college band in our motivations, talents, and passions. We are known for performing consistently tight, energetic, and original music. Currently, The Rocky Coasts have multiple albums worth of original music ready for recording and release.
What has been your favorite show and why?
Rhys: The first show we played in Boulder was probably my favorite show due to the shock of the number of people that showed up. It was in TJ's driveway and completely blew away my expectations of the kind of shows we could throw here. There was no promotion for it and barely any set up except for a few practice amps and a house lamp for lighting but over a hundred people came out of the woodwork just from the sound of the music alone.
What is your favorite behind-the-scenes story?
Teak (Saxophone): One of our backyard shows got really rowdy, kids stage diving off of 8ft sheds, which later collapsed from the number of people on them, 200+ people were there, the cops were called and the owners of the house got 70 hours of community service each for inciting a riot. It was wild.
Can you tell us some of the themes in your songs?
Rhys: I get a lot of my themes from other art I consume, mainly from the many movies I’m obsessed with. These can be anything from being young and having fun to existential fears.
What are some of your hobbies outside of music?
TJ: I love to work on art, frequently making album art and stencils to make prints, posters, and clothing for the band.
What is one thing you hope your fans remember about you?
Kiril: If the fans remember anything about The Rocky Coasts, it would definitely be the energy of their live shows. When we play live, the whole house shakes with the sound of the music, and the whole crowd moves from the energy of the band. On top of this, by playing entirely original music, we strive for the fans will remember watching the post-COVID music scene come up around them.

"Whether it's protecting their amps from rain, using a five gallon bucket as a snare drum, or getting shut down by the cops 10 minutes into their set, the surf rock group refuses to be knocked down by whatever Boulder throws their way. Quickly establishing themselves as a key player in the Boulder music scene, The Rocky Coasts are gaining popularity performing at house parties and University of Colorado Boulder events."
"The Rocky Coasts' shows are filled with high energy students that are extremly dedicated to the band. They have broken through the Boulder music scene and are headed very big places"
